For more than five years now, Tom has looked forward to his daily green smoothie, which has pretty much remained unchanged all this time. It’s hard to improve on perfection, so we blend up several days’ worth at a time in our Vitamix. With its base of cucumbers, celery, apples, and grapes, it’s both refreshing and light, ideal for breakfast or an afternoon snack. Patty and Andrea have been known to enjoy theirs with some rum — and a good laugh — at the end of the day.

Makes 4 smoothies, 10 ounces each

Ingredients

12 ounces apple cider
½ to 1 large cucumber, peeled and chopped in pieces
1 apple, cored, sliced, and chopped
1 kiwi, peeled and chopped
1 stalk broccoli, chopped
6 leaves kale, stems removed
2 stalks celery, chopped
juice of 1 lemon
1 ½ cups frozen grapes
several ice cubes if you want it frothy

Method

Combine all the ingredients in a powerful blender and process until smooth.
